Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Nicholson Street Public School will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on Tuesday 3 December 2019 from 6pm – 7:30pm in our school library and all parents, carers and teachers are encouraged to attend.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber safety education program that educates parents, carers and teachers of how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online, and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way. ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation covers issues relating to children and young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.

For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au or see Mrs Ross.

Jesse shines at the SSC Balmain PEP workshops

Jesse (5/6N) had a wonderful time at the Peninsula Engagement Program (PEP) held at Sydney Secondary College, Balmain in weeks 8 and 9 of this term.

The 2019 PEP theme was "Working together in your community". The mission statement for PEP is to create leaders in our community. This applies to primary and secondary students and teachers. Each subject/elective involved fun, engaging and challenging teaching and learning experiences for students in Years 4 and 5. There are some photos of the PEP experience and creations in the Gallery section of this website.

Jesse has written a recount of his PEP experience below.

Going into PEP was very nerve wracking. In my class I had no friends but no worries because I made heaps of friends. When everybody introduced themselves I realised that we had a drama teacher, so it turned out that we were doing Japanese mixed with drama.

On the first day at PEP we really got to know about the Japanese culture. We learnt all about the Japanese language and loads about mascots. We learnt about what they do and the rules they have to follow.

Then it was lunch and the food was so good. I got to see my friends and I could tell by their faces that their first sessions were great like mine.

When we got back inside we played a lot of drama/Japanese games. Our classroom had a really good view of the harbour. We had to look out on the harbour and think of a Japanese mascot, or Yuru-chara, to represent the Balmain/Peninsula area. I made really good friends with my partner and we had a really cool idea.

We started sketching our puppet and I knew it was going to turn out great.

The next day we got our materials and started working on our amazing puppets. We used bottles to make the shape of the puppet.

We finally finished our amazing puppets. Our puppet was a mixture of a dog, cat and ice-cream. Our puppet is friendly, nice and loves cuddles!

To finish off the PEP days we learnt about all the different puppets, how they are controlled and we also watched a few amazing videos about puppets.

Personally I think it was a wonderful experience and I encourage other people like me or you to go.

Here is a recount of Misha's success from the author herself:

There were around 10 winners in each category. The winning entries will be posted on the Council's website soon.

I was very happy to receive the award for my writing piece on why 'Reading is my secret power'.

I was also proud to represent Nicholson Street Public School at the award ceremony.

Nicho Environment Fundraiser

By Emily (4/5M), Harper (4/5M) and Vilma (3/4P)

Firstly we would like to give a big thank-you to:

* Remi and Mila B, Lotte C, Maya A and Freya E.

To the parents who were involved, a big thank-you to:

* Daisy (Olive and Louis's mum), and Kati (Vilma, Oliver and Minttu's mum).

We'd like to give a big thanks to Kathryn (Emily and James's mum) and to Ms Norrish who helped make this possible.

You may be thinking ... What is this?

Well, this is a fundraiser that we did on Monday 16 September. We made cookies, brownies, cakes and badges to raise money to help the environment at our school.

For example, we will buy flowers to plant and worms for the compost. We also want to get bin stickers so people know what to put in the bin and put it in the right bin.

In total we raised $265! Thank-you to all the people who bought things from our stall! We hope you liked our food.

Special note from Mrs Ross: Congratulations Emily, Harper and Vilma for being very entrepreneurial and doing something wonderful for the environment at the same time! Well done!

Metro South St Peters SASS Recognition Week Breakfast

On Thursday 12 September, 2019 our wonderful School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff were special guests at the Metro South St Peters SASS Recognition Week Breakfast at Camperdown Commons.

SASS Recognition Week is a time to acknowledge and thank the often unsung heroes in NSW public schools. The Nicho SAS staff play an important role in our school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter our school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community.

SAS staff work in our school office, in classrooms and libraries and they also help to maintain our school grounds. They are often the ones to tend to students when they are unwell and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions.

On behalf of the Nicho community, I would like to acknowledge and thank all our SAS staff - Cindy Murray (School Administrative Manager), Jen Makim (School Administrative Officer), Nunik Alexander (School Learning Support Officer), Sarah John (SLSO), Jesse Jordan (SLSO), Sid Stuart (General Assistant), Joan Seller (Library Admin) - for the valuable work they perform and their contribution to supporting great teaching and learning outcomes at Nicho.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

For more information, contact Service NSW on 137 788 or creativekids@service.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Congratulations to our School Chess Representatives!

On Friday 17 May 2019, Ms Djordjevic and I took eight Nicho students - Darcy, Meiji, Meera, Oliver, Branson, Beau, Dylan and Charlie - to the local Sydney heats of the Interschool Chess Challenge. Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney, hosted the tournament.

I am so proud of our students' performance and behaviour. They were exemplary Nicho role models! All students tried their best, were very humble in victory and very gracious in defeat.

All students each played seven chess games with a mixture of wins, losses and some stalemates. The competition was very intense with over 150 students from many Sydney schools competing.

Overall we placed just outside the top three schools. All of the students had a wonderful time and learnt some very valuable strategies that they will put into place during our weekly lunchtime chess club and at next year's competition.

Mrs Ross

Look at our new STEM resources!

Our teachers and students will enjoy the new STEM resources that we have recently purchased.

The Ozobot EVO Classroom Kit will be utilised across K-6.

Ozobot EVO is the newest generation, award-winning smart miniature robot that bridges the digital and physical world, through coding, creative play and gaming activities. From paper projects to colour codes, EVO inspires future artists and engineers

The STEM Project Box Sets will provide opportunities for K-6 students to develop Science knowledge and skills, Design and Technology skills, Mathematics skills and general capabilities while completing short or long-term projects. They encourage students to follow a consistent design process while completing the projects, including finding out information, planning and designing, creating, evaluating and communicating.

The projects allow students to work in small teams, using effective communication and collaboration skills, to plan, design, create and evaluate a thoughtful and innovative solution to a given task. When satisfied with their solutions, students showcase and discuss their design, explaining how science was used throughout the project.

The STEM Curriculum books will assist all teachers to prepare their students for the roles of the future! Minds will be challenged and imaginations unleashed as students develop skills such as innovation, creativity, reasoning and problem-solving; and technical science skills such as questioning, observing, systematic experimentation, and analysis and interpretation of data.

We have eight cute little chicks!

We are fortunate that we have eight cute little chicks in the KW classroom. They will be with us for another week. The KW students have been working hard with lots of fun "chick" activities over this past week.

How do we know if we have roosters or hens? At this stage in the process, there is no difference in visual appearance between a male and female chick. Both sexes appear the same until the differing traits become apparent. You will not know for about 8 weeks until the chick moves into the next stage of development being "a pullet" if it is a rooster or a hen.

Ms Williams will provide details this week to all Nicho families about the possibility of purchasing one of the chicks to take home.

Chicks R Us are happy to sell the chicks from the classroom experience for $10 each to Nicho families and friends.

Chicks R Us want you to have a positive fun experience with your chickens at all times and are committed to supporting their customers to achieve this. To support parents, they offer a follow up service for the six weeks after you take your chicken home.

From their experience some families find after a while that they cannot look after the chickens as initially thought. Their service provides an option to parents of returning their chickens, by them bringing the chickens to the farm. The parents can call them arrange a time they will visit the farm and drop off their chicken or rooster free.

If you are interested in purchasing one of the chicks, please look out for information which will be sent home this week via the class parent contacts.

Good luck to all of our Year 3 and Year 5 students who begin their NAPLAN journey today. We know that you will relax and try your very best.

If your child is sick on any of the NAPLAN days, please contact the school.

Additional NAPLAN Advice for parents

1. Encourage confidence - 'a can do attitude' and 'do your personal best attitude'.

2. Prepare your child by encouraging them to go to bed early, having breakfast, have their water bottle and a nutritional lunch and snacks prepared; try to keep minimal stress levels at home; arrive at school on time.

3. Keep perspective - This is just a test in time; just one form of assessment; success is not determined by a test.

We really loved the attached poster, titled "30 Things a Standardised Test Can't Measure" and thought we'd share it with you.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Congratulations to Sylvie (5/6N), Bella (4/5M) and former Nicho students Katie & Alyssa who are part of the NSW Department of Education Arts Unit Junior Singers ensemble. The group performed at the Education Department's new Parramatta office at the recent ANZAC Day ceremony. The students sang like angels and it was a very beautiful and moving performance.

Additionally, during the course of last term over 350 students auditioned to be a member of the Southern Stars Performing Company. Bella was successful at the audition and will now represent Nicho as a featured artist in the Southern Stars 2019 concert “Come Alive”.

Bella has also been successful at progressing to the final round of auditions (only 23 students selected to go through to the final round from over 800 applicants) for a solo part at this year's Schools Spectacular!

We can't wait to see you perform Bella!

Thank you to Art of Bloom Florist, Balmain, for the wonderful wreath that was prepared for our students and staff to lay at the Loyalty Square cenotaph.

This cenotaph may be Australia’s oldest war memorial. It was created on April 23 1916, just before the first anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, which makes it one of the world’s oldest Anzac memorials.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Selective High School Applications Open 10 October

Some primary schools across NSW offer places in ‘opportunity classes' for gifted and talented students in Years 5 and 6. To be considered for placement students must sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5.

Selective high schools cater for the specific needs of high achieving gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Selective schools help gifted and talent students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents apply when the student is in Year 5. The students sit the test in March of Year 6.

To be considered for placement students must sit the Selective High School Placement Test. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

Some selective high schools have vacancies in Years 8 to 12. Applications open in late June for placement the following year. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/years-8-to-12.
